The First Week of Glasses

'You know, anyone who wears glasses, in one sense or another, is a cyborg'- Evgeny Morozov When you are prescribed glasses, it can mean a variety of things. In one instance, you could have been handed a raw deal in that your eyes betrayed from a very young age and caused you to bump into so many different things. Peers mocked you with taunts such as 'four eyes' and berate your below average eyesight, with the added danger of your necessary accessory being damaged through youthful hijinks. The fear of breaking a pair of glasses and having to sit through a lecture from your parents about responsibility would only make the whole situation more stressful. So, youth of the world, don't pick on the kid with glasses because they have enough shit to deal with. I can pull this off, right? Of course, that awful beast known as 'ageing' is one that stalks us all. Our bodies, once blessed with the ability to do incredible feats such as climb over walls and dance t...

The Highs and Lows of Filling the Video Game Void

'Every age has its storytelling form, and video gaming is a huge part of our culture. You can ignore or embrace video games and imbue them with the best artistic quality. People are enthralled with video games in the same way as other people love the cinema or theatre'- Andy Serkis The crushing realisation that the future of the United Kingdom hangs in the balance with this crucial Brexit vote (the result of which will be known once this is published on 20 January) means that we have to find a way to escape these vital but frustrating political shenanigans. There are many ways to do this, such as curling up in a ball and convincing yourself that everything is fine and dandy. Shutting off all news feeds and shunning the people on social media dedicated to announcing their political agenda are all viable options as well. But, in the opinion of this humble blogger, picking up a damn good video game is the most sensible option. Art Since October, the daily schedule has had ...

One Year On

'Healing is a matter of time, but it is sometimes also a matter of opportunity'- Hippocrates As a historian, I always enjoy a good anniversary. It seems pretty morbid and twisted to celebrate destructive conflicts, for example, but it is integral to remember the pivotal moments in history as a reference to how much has changed over the years. The passing of the First World War's centenary brought about beautiful images of remembrance across the globe, even though controversy surrounds the potential political hijacking of the remembrance poppy.  Events like these deserve the greatest amount of commemoration, much like a wedding anniversary does on a more personal level. For me, a very important anniversary just occurred, yet required no great act of remembrance or a themed present. It has now been over a year since I was falsely accused of being a menace to society by 'exploring my body openly' in a public place and then making inappropriate advances towards a y...

A Teetotally Good Night Out: Some Observations from Sober Eyes

'We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we're curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths'- Walt Disney We all like a good party, especially when we have the chance to dress up. Our imaginations and creativity can run wild with brilliant ideas of what temporary identities we can make for ourselves for occasions like Halloween or a standard birthday shindig. It certainly helps when you collaborate with friends and family to go as a duo/ group, since you don't have to make as much effort in figuring out what to do for a costume. The light bulb moment to dress as the Kray twins, the infamous London gangsters of the 1960s and 1970s, was perfect; fancy suits, a few props to demonstrate our violent nature and an attitude to raise some hell. Definitely helps that you're actually brothers as well. London's finest Yet this would be a brand new adventure, and not just because it was the first time experiencing a proper ni...
